Margherita

Passionate Polish surfer, Margherita launched herself into surf business a few years back. Let's hear more about her.

HI MARGHERITA, COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN A FEW WORDS?

Hey, I am Margherita.I am a Polish surfer and I have been living in Ericeira, Portugal, for the past2 years. I opened two surf camps, one here in Portugal and one in Costa Rica in2018 and 2019, and ran about 20 camps since then.

WHAT WERE YOUR MOTIVATIONS FOR STARTING SURFING?

I have always been into board sports. I was snowboarding a lot back in Poland and I am now doing a bit of Downhill longboard as well. As I've always loved being in the water, starting surfing was an obvious choice to me. After my first surf camp inAlgarve (South Portugal), I started travelling to surf (Morocco, Sri Lanka,...) and here I am now, back in Portugal!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A WOMAN IN THE WATER TODAY?

I have always been inspired by women pushing me to live near the ocean and be in the water everyday. My surf camps are primarily made up of women and girls which makes me extremely proud! I'm trying to be an example for the next generation of girls wanting to get into surfing, especially in Poland where I come from.

WHAT DOES SURFING BRING TO YOUR DAILY LIFE? DOES SURFING PLAY A ROLE INYOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Surfing for me today is a life-driving passion. My sustained relationship with surfing is through my surf camps, which I love. It allows me to work remotely for a large part of the year, and surf all around in the world!

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ECOLOGY, AS A SURFER AND AS A BUSINESSWOMAN? HOW DO YOU TRYTO EDUCATE PEOPLE THROUGH YOUR SURF CAMPS?

I try to adopt an educational voice with people in my surf camps. We organize regular beach-cleaning days inPortugal and Costa Rica. A lot of Polish people come over for the surf camps and there is very little knowledge about eco-solutions over there. It's becoming more and more popular, but we are not there yet. So, environmental awareness, trash selection, better eating, and so on, are part of the vision I want to adopt in my surf camps.

On top of that, I give1% of my revenue to the MARE Foundation, which aims at protecting the BalticSea (Editor's note: You can learn more about it here: https://fundacjamare.pl/en/)
